The Ragged Man Character Concept Gallery
The first character concept art from The Ragged Man by Neil Van Antwerpen.
The Ragged Man Initial Concept
The Ragged Man is an aging, homeless insomnolent and, just maybe, the one thing standing between the world and its destruction. Physically incapable of sleeping, he suffers from violent delusions, as complex as they are crazy. The Ragged Man believes that, when the spearhead of an alien invasion force crash-landed inside his body five years ago, he was forced to act as a physical barrier against them. With every skin cell, with every drop of blood the Ragged Man sheds, the world is ending inch by inch.

Overwatch Initial Concept
Overwatch is a stocky, bald man in his early forties. He has sharply defined features and never smiles. He dresses simply and his manner and body language are extremely subdued. He stands with his arms by his sides or behind his back and his feet close together, a calm authority to his posture. Overwatch’s only hope is to draw the Ragged Man into conflict, forcing him to release his stolen energies so that he can absorb them into himself and set his world to rights. It is this desperate hope that drives him. Overwatch acts with the supreme, unquestioned confidence of a man who knows that nothing he does in this world has any moral significance.

Paradox Initial Concept
The subject of many of the Ragged Man’s visions, Paradox is every inch the classic superhero. He’s in fantastic shape and inhumanly graceful. He operates under an entirely alien set of physical rules, totally at odds with the Ragged Man’s world. He wears a predominantly blue one-piece costume, his skin a fluid silver. Paradox’s eyes and hair are a brilliant white, energy trails streaming from them as he moves. Paradox is seen only in the Ragged Man’s hallucinations, which the Ragged Man interprets as the history of the aliens trapped inside him. All we can tell about Paradox as a character is that he was a creature of tremendous power and, as with all his people, he never did anything but fight. It was as if his very existence was the catalyst for global conflict.

Consensus and The Grudge Initial Concepts
The Grudge was once a creature of immense strength and nobility, now reduced to a grotesque and parasitic mockery. Consensus had the power to absorb and control minds, but now must steal bodies to maintain her own, hundreds of shrunken figures compressed together.
